BACKSTORY — THE MOONLIT MEDIUM

PROLOGUE

TW// Child abuseFiona was born as Vasfryn of house Auvryett, but she would later change that name. She was a Drow in the sinful city of Orlytlar, where Lolth-worshippers were shunned and where vice and greed were worshiped instead. Gambling, illicit substances, black markets, trafficking, black magic and violence – It’s a sinner’s paradise. Fiona’s parents were no exception. Both were part of a black magic cult, killing young Drow to both sell their body parts on the meat market, and to use their blood in their dark rituals. Their deals with otherworldly beings played parts in their massive success and string of good fortune. They created a revered house in their corner of the city, members of the house known for their wealth, their presence in multiple types of markets, and their tactfulness.

IN CHILDHOOD

Fiona was created as a sacrificial lamb. Sacrificing their first born would promise them phenomenal power and influence – the ultimate key to securing their status and to move towards controlling a city that was deemed uncontrollable. If this part of their blood oath was not fulfilled, a curse would be bestowed upon their bloodline, to be forever tormented by spirits that were victims of their wrath. They needed a clever child, believing that strength of the mind was superior to physical strength. – And the clever made for better sacrifices. When she was young, her parents would put a tranquilizing drug into her beverages before she went to bed, ensuring she would sleep heavily as they drained blood from her body. This was done for two reasons: To make her rely on her brain and brain only, and for the use of her young blood in their black masses. Fiona was left sickly and feeble, much smaller than other Drow at her age. Furious at her own weakness, Fiona would sneak out of her estate to walk the city streets, looking for fights. Anything to shed the feeling of being so frail. Small. Unfortunately for her, that was exactly what she was, and often lost the fights she would pick. With her body failing her, she realized that her physical strength wasn’t going to get her anywhere. Beginning to make real use of her mind, she resorted to stealing, peddling illicit substances, and gambling. What she lacked in physical strength, she made up for in quick wits, street smarts, resourcefulness, and her ability to cheat, steal and lie.

Fiona would often notice servants and staff around the house would disappear, only for ghostly remnants of them to appear to her in her sleep. She was very aware that her mother was murdering them, but it did not bother her particularly. It was extremely common in Drow society for such things to happen. The weak were exterminated. What was odd was that her mother had been paying more attention to her, mothers were not known to interact much with their offspring. When she turned 18, her mother mentioned that she had noticed her daughter’s accelerating skills, and that soon enough, she would bring pride to their house’s name. After ten years of training her mind, Fiona knew that something was amiss. Her mother hardly gave any sort of praise to anyone. She soon discovered her mother and father’s plans to kill her by snooping around, so she decided to beat them to the punch. With her newfound connections on the street, Fiona was able to get her hands on a copious amount of Midnight Tears, an incredibly potent poison that takes effect at the stroke of midnight, and she planned on spiking the house’s supply of wine with it. She figured that her parents were smart enough to have slaves test their drinks and food before ingesting it themselves, for it would be too easy for someone to assassinate them if precautions weren’t made. There wouldn’t be any evidence of this poison before midnight, and Fiona relied on the subtleness of the poison, and her mother underestimating her cleverness, for her plan to work.Which it did.At the stroke of midnight, everyone who drank the heavily poisoned wine dropped dead, freeing Fiona from her fate to become a sacrifice. However, with the blood-oath broken, she was cursed to be haunted by every restless soul that was wronged by her family. This would be the catalyst for her downfall in later years.

YOUNG ADULTHOOD

During the next several years, up until age 100, Fiona continued her business of outsmarting and manipulating others, but the spirits haunting her drove her to become paranoid and restless, despite her fortified mind. It started subtle, with objects moving and shadows appearing, but it quickly escalated as the years went on. Nightmares, hallucinations, voices in her head – it was enough to drive anyone to insanity. Fiona began to indulge in the substances she was selling, along with drinking and partying to distract herself from the miserable souls that followed her.

EILISTRAEE

When she turned 100, only then reaching full maturity, did she realize how long she would have to suffer with this curse. She had a breakdown, the weight of her society and ways of living fully crashing down on her, and she realized how truly miserable she was. That night, instead of another horrid nightmare, she was visited by the Drow Moon Maiden, Eilistraee. Eilistraee wiped her tears, comforting her and letting her feel the warmth of the moonlight. She explained that she could help her escape, if that really was the path she wanted to go down. Even at her lowest point, Fiona struggled to push her selfish nature aside at first. To trust someone with her wellbeing like that was a massive risk, but eventually, she realized she had nothing less to lose.Eilistraee helped guide her out of the Underdark, blessing her to keep her travels safe. Fiona’s first sight of the topside world was the glowing moonlight, along with her newfound goddess there to greet her. In this moment, Fiona felt some of the weight lift from her shoulders, awestruck by the beauty that surrounded her. At first, she tried to pledge her life to Eilistraee, used to the system of becoming a tool for someone to use for personal gain. Instead, Eilistraee encouraged Fiona to only dedicate her life to her in ways that would benefit herself and other people instead, like pursuing something she wanted to do, not something she felt like she had to do. Or helping others in need. Unsure how to start her new life in this new world, Fiona was quick to doubt herself, expressing that her skills were honed for selfishness, and that was all she knew how to be. As a bit of motivation, Eilistraee bestowed the gift of magic upon her. Something for Fiona to nurture and use to build a better life for herself and others. Overcome with gratitude and determination, Fiona vowed to dedicate her future choices in life to her in return, and to try her best to live by her teachings. This is when Eilistraee helped her choose her new name, in which she chose Fiona, meaning beautiful, which is what Eilistraee told her she was.

NEW LIFE

Fiona struggled a lot trying to shed her old ways, but Eilistraee showed her patience and understanding, becoming a mentor and friend to her as she tried to get used to living on the surface. Being a goddess of music, she taught Fiona how to sing and play the lyre, believing that this new hobby will help her find inner peace whenever she feels troubled. She also continued to struggle with the curse, but Eilistraee taught her to face it head on, to make her now natural connection to the spirit world something she could use, something she could control. This led to Fiona becoming a Spirit Bard, wanting to gain knowledge of the creepy, the mystical, and the downright strange. By using her newfound sorcery and her growing interest in the undead, she started to make a living off of paranormal investigating. She either helped spirits move to the next plane of existence, or she destroyed evil undead that plagued towns and villages. For 60 years, she worked alone, her lack of social skills keeping people at a distance from her, along with the fact that she was a Drow. Eventually, she met her current band of friends, who now also help her with her investigations. Life began to get a little easier, and Fiona finally felt what it was like to find a real family, to have people she loved and cared for. She made sure to still perform little acts of gratitude and appreciation for Eilistraee, as she wouldn’t be this happy if it weren’t for her help. This included playing her Lyre and singing, perfecting her skills with her sword, and occasionally dancing naked under the light of the moon.

THE TRANSFORMATION

When Lolth struck down Eilistraee, it was said that all of her followers could feel a grief so strong that it took their breaths away. Fiona had never mourned in such a way before, losing the very person that was the reason for her salvation. Along with the agonizing stab of grief, she also felt herself begin to physically change. Horns sprouted from her head, along with a tail to match. Parts of her skin became scaled, and her once piercing green eyes turned murky and pale, now more sensitive to sunlight than ever before. Fiona, and others like her, were transformed into Isilmnir’el Tieflings “by the abyssal aftermath of Her fall, and the remaining splinters of Her essence.” This physical change only worsened the feeling of grief, at least at first. Just another reminder that her mentor, her friend, was dead.In her grief, Fiona struggled to keep herself together. Her world was turned upside down, and she began to question everything. If Eilistraee failed, did that mean that she, too, was doomed? Was she living a facade of what she thought was genuine self improvement? Could someone like her truly be better? The vices she worked hard to kick slowly crept back into her life. It would start with a drink at the tavern occasionally, then a drink every night, then several. It became a habit to keep a filled flask on her at all times. Her friends, now best friends of 20 years, did their best to try to comfort her, but she was quick to shut them out, ashamed of her habits returning after working so hard to get better. Every word of concern felt like a dagger to her heart, intrusive thoughts from her days in the Underdark telling her that she was weak for her tears, that her friends thought that she was weak. She finally blew up at them in a fit of blind pain and rage, hurling nasty words at them and telling them that she never wanted to see them again. Hurt by her words, they left her alone to allow her to calm down. They never intended to leave her forever, only to give them all the space they obviously needed, but Fiona didn’t know that. Feeling even more hopeless now after chasing her only real family away, she fled, disappearing for almost a year, intending to return to the Underdark. She never got the chance to, as she was abducted by Mind Flayers before she could. The rest is history.
